About ZAMWA

ZAMBIA MEDIA WOMEN PROFILE

ZAMWA is a national media Association  for women journalists from the print, electronic media and communication sectors formed in 1985 and registered under the Society’s Act as a non- profit organization.

ZAMWA’s primary assemblage is women and uses the media as a powerful tool to advance issues that affect them for social change and agenda setting.

ZAMWA employs ICT competences of its 300-plus members to give visibility to issues of concern to the society. The secretariat was run by a Co-ordinator, Programmes Officer, an Accountant and an Office Assistant.

ZAMWA’S PAST PROGRAMMES

  • ZAMWA participated in the South-South Media Women Exchange Programme under the auspices of Fredskorpset- Norway. The Programme involves 5 countries namely: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Nepal and Zambia.
  • ZAMWA led the Advocacy and Media cluster of the Tisunge Ana Athu Akazi Coalition (TAAAC) on Sexual Violence against adolescent girls in schools. The coalition is comprised of eight Civil Society Organisations namely: PPAZ, CAMFED, YWCA, FAWEZA, ZNWLG, ZARD, WLSA and Population Council. The project was sponsored by UN Trust Fund to end Violence against women through Equality Now.
  • ZAMWA is trained Journalists on How to report on Safe Abortion and its impact on Safe motherhood. The Project was sponsored by IPAS.
  • ZAMWA was vice-chair of the Media Information Technical Sector Advisory Committee (MISTAC) of the Technical Education Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA).
  • ZAMWA co-ordinates publicity activities for World Press Freedom Day commemorations.
  • ZAMWA holds the Vice Presidency of the Media Liaison Committee, a consortium of Media bodies in Zambia. The Media Liaison Committee spearheads and advocates for Press Freedom.
  • ZAMWA sat on the Information, Education and Communications Committee of the technical working group of the National AIDS Council (NAC) after the organisation undertook ZNAN Project on HIV and AIDS in 2007.
  • ZAMWA sat on the National Action Plan on Women, Girls and HIV/AIDS technical committee.
  • ZAMWA coordinated publicity activities for the 2007 International Women‘s Day where supplements in the print media, radio and television discussion programmes and a documentary, sponsored by UNFPA, were aired.

ZAMWA PAST ACHIEVEMENTS

  • The outreach programmes supported by the Zambia National Aids Network (ZNAN) were a great success. Under this programme, members assessed the impact of HIV and AIDS on women in rural areas of Lufwanyama in Copperbelt Province; Kapiri- mposhi in Central Province; Monze in Southern Province and Chipata in Eastern Province.
  • ZAMWA ran a programme aimed at enhancing communication techniques and skills of female Members of Parliaments when dealing with their electorate.
